We all need to eat. Unfortunately some children may be tempted to eat too much. Start good habits early and help avoid obesity as your child grows up.

Food is one of life’s most glorious pleasures. Sharing great meals with your child can be a very memorable experience. Sometimes children eat too much. As a result they may find themselves overweight. There are many different strategies to help a child avoid excess weight and avoid obesity.

Healthy Food Fun

One such strategy to cope with overeating and unhealthy food choices is to think about making healthy food fun. Fun food can mean a variety of different ideas. Try cutting up vegetables in enticing ways. Make green pepper Christmas trees topped with olives and pimento. Use the cookie cutter on various kinds of sandwiches and turn them into edible art. Use your imagination to help children enjoy healthy food choices.

You can also teach your child to play with food. Create interesting garnishes with peeled carrots shaped into bows or radishes cut into flowers. Citrus fruit peels can be teased into elegant animals with careful knife skills. Celery can be coaxed into long boats compete with toothpick oarsmen. Use your imagination and bring your child along for the ride. Early childhood is the perfect time to teach children about the right way to eat.

Good Eating Habits

Involve the child in food preparation to teach him good eating habits. Food preparation doesn’t always have to mean a parent in the kitchen and a child seated resentfully at the dinner table. A good way to get your child more interested in a diverse diet is often via a cooking class. Many community colleges offer short classes designed for young students. A parent and child can attend a few evening sessions and learn how to prepare anything from a well-balanced soup to the perfect tart. This is one way to help avoid excessive weight.

Consider enlisting your child’s friends and relatives to attend with you and make healthy classes in eating even more fun. The next-door neighbor’s enthusiasm can be just the push your child needs to discover how much he loves good eats.

Younger children may not be ready for a cooking class. But they can be ready to help you in the kitchen. Start with food shopping to help children love food. Have your child help you choose the ripest peach or prettiest tomato. Set aside a small part of your shopping cart just for him. When you get home let him set aside a few shelves in the pantry for his own use. Children like having their own spaces. Good eating habits will help him grow well.

Healthy Snacks

Store healthy snacks so he can reach in for a quick bite to eat. While you cook, enlist his help. Get him a special cooking outfit of his own and some easy to use tools. Small children can peel vegetables or scrub potatoes. They can help you pound meat, open a jar, smash garlic, fill a pan with water, grate cheese and top sauce on a main course.

With a bit of planning even the unhealthiest of eaters can avoid excessive weight and childhood obesity. Better yet become a life long vegetable lover.
