This article will show you how to make healthy choices wherever you go and what to avoid at restaurants and parties, at the office, on business trips and on holiday.

Food. It is all around us. At the mall, at the movies and at our work place. We are so bombarded with claims and new products, how do we know what our healthy choices are? Read on to find out what you best and worst food choices are when you are out and about and which items you should try your best to avoid!

Dining Out

With so many tantalizing dishes you may be tempted to order that creamy pasta or fried chicken. You can still enjoy the foods you love, but here is a way to make them healthier.

  • When you are ordering stir fry, ask them to use water instead of oil when preparing the dish.
  • Have your fish and rice steamed instead of fried.
  • Choose salad as a side dish instead of French fries.
  • Drink water with your meal and try to avoid sodas.
  • Enjoy fruit for dessert.
  • Ask the waiter to pack half of your meal before they bring it to the table so you won’t be tempted to overeat.
  • Enjoy all dressings and condiments on the side so you can control the amount on your food.

At The Office

It is very easy to pick up a snack on the way to work, maybe eat a donut and coffee in the morning and then order a lunch of fast food. Save you wallet and your waistline with these options:

  • Eat breakfast before you leave for work. (Try a smoothie; they are quick and easy to prepare.)
  • Make your lunch the night before so you will not be so rushed in the morning.
  • Try to include some protein and fibre in your meal to give you energy all day long.
  • Bring a water bottle and leave it on your desk to remind you to drink throughout the day.
  • Include a snack of veggies and dip or fresh fruit for the afternoon munchies.

Get-Togethers

Eating is a very social activity, and there is always food around when people gather together. Here are a few tips to help you make it through your next party without feeling deprived:

  • Eat something right before you leave for your event. You are less likely to graze on a full stomach.
  • Look for veggie and fruit plates and try to avoid processed food such as crackers and breads.
  • Enjoy baked or broiled meats instead of fried ones.
  • Drink plenty of water if you are going to indulge in an alcoholic drink, sibce alcohol has a dehydrating effect.
