Chemical toxins in our foods upset the body's balance and may cause serious health problems. Learn why choosing organic foods may help prevent health issues in the future

There are approximately 87,000 chemicals in use today, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These chemicals can be found in practically all commercial products, including our food. As researchers learn more about them, it becomes apparent that these chemicals pose serious risks to our health. One way we can avoid the dangers of toxic chemicals is to eat organic foods.

Pesticides are chemical toxins that are commonly used in the production of food to kill pests such as weeds, insects, and rodents. They are poisonous and toxic in large doses. Research links pesticides to a number of health problems including cancer, allergies, and autoimmune disorders. Research also indicates that chronic exposure can lead to neurological and endocrine damage. Pesticides have been shown to disrupt hormonal activity in the body, which is a great health concern because hormones control many critical bodily functions including metabolism and reproductive function.

Though the Environmental Protection Agency has approved the use of pesticides within established limits, they admit that they have limited resources to carry out toxicity testing. The best way to truly avoid these dangerous chemicals in your diet is to purchase organic foods whenever possible.

The National Organics Program, developed by the USDA, sets rigorous standards for foods to be labeled "organic". They must be processed without using any synthetic pesticides or petroleum-based fertilizers. They also set guidelines for the production of organic livestock, including no antibiotics or growth hormones.

Choosing organic foods is a wise decision for your health. Additionally, you'll find that the higher quality of organic products typically have better flavor and texture. It may be difficult to eat organic 100% of the time, but simply making the extra effort on occasion is a great way to start. It's an easy way to improve your health now and prevent serious problems in the future.
