Expensive products do not have to be purchased to try a home colon cleanse.

One popular alternative health procedure is colon irrigation therapy. Also called colonics, this therapy is performed by a professional and takes up to three office visits. Many people can enjoy the health benefits of colon irrigation therapy by simply performing a home colon cleanse. This can be done in the privacy of a home and in the timeframe that one prefers.

A juice or water fast that is done for twenty-four hours prior to the cleanse is said to speed up the entire process and help stimulate a sluggish colon. Simply drink water or 100% organic fruit juice and avoid all solid foods. Some people prefer to also eat raw fruits and vegetables during this time as well. Avoid all cooked and processed foods, including meats, soups, crackers and snacks during this time.

Once one has fasted for one complete day, it's then time to begin eating foods that are high in fiber. These include uncooked fruits and vegetables with the skins on, beans, legumes, and whole grains, such as whole oats, barley, and bran flakes. Do not eat any dairy or meat products, and try to avoid fruits and vegetables that have been cooked.

Take a probiotic, such as acidophilus, to add friendly bacteria to the intestinal tract. This is especially important if one has taken an antibiotic recently, or if there are symptoms of yeast overgrowth, such as thrush, athlete's foot, or vaginal yeast infections. At the same time, also begin taking flax seeds, psyllium, or slippery elm to encourage the colon to empty.

Laxatives and enemas can be used, but do so with caution and use them sparingly. Laxatives can cause dependence and they can also cause depletion of minerals such as potassium, which can be dangerous. Enemas can cause damage to the rectum and lower colon, and depending on the solution used, can cause damage to the liver or other organs if not used properly.

Performing a home colon cleanse several times per year doesn't have to cost a lot of money and no special products containing unnatural ingredients need to be purchased for it to work. A home colon cleanse will help one to enjoy health benefits such as increased energy, bowel regularity, and a reduced risk of cancer. To maintain good colon health after any kind of cleansing program, be sure to continue to eat a diet high in fiber and low in fat. Eating meat and dairy products only occasionally and not daily, will also help to keep the colon in good condition.
