Are You Getting Enough Fluids?

Sep 29, 2009 Kristie Leong

Most people don't drink enough water which can lead to excessive fatigue and even frank dehydration. Here's how to start drinking more water everyday.

Water is critical for every cellular reaction that occurs in the body. Not only is it important for cells, but it helps to keep mucous membranes moist and the skin soft and dewy. When mild dehydration occurs due to insufficient water intake a person may become thirsty, tired, and listless. In more severe cases, there can be a rapid heartbeat, headache, lightheadedness, confusions, and, in severe cases, death.

Obviously, this isn’t the end result most people want which is why it’s important to drink more water. Sometimes the day is so filled with activities that a person can forget to drink enough during the day - leading to symptoms of fatigue and loss of energy. The solution? Here’s how to drink more water everyday.

Carry It with You

To drink more water everyday, keep a water bottle in easy reach at all times. Most people don’t have the time to seek out a source of water during a busy day. Carrying along a water supply ensures that water is always available for leisurely sipping. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle to the exercise club. Large amounts of water can be lost through sweating during an intense workout.

Add Some Flavor

Some people don’t like the taste, or lack of taste, of tap water. This can be easily remedied by adding homemade flavorings to plain water. The most obvious choices are fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice, but there are other possibilities. Buy some fruit juice at the grocery store and mix a small amount into plain water to add flavor. Some good choices are cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice, grapefruit juice, and orange juice. For more exotic flavors, try mango or acai berry juice. To stay inspired to drink more water, carry a different flavored water everyday!

Make It a Habit

To drink more water everyday, make it a habit to drink a glass at specified intervals during the day. Drink a glass immediately upon arising in the morning to ease a dry mouth and to replenish water reserves that have diminished from seven or more hours without drinking fluids. Plan to drink a glass every hour or two throughout the day. Make it easy by carrying a water bottle everywhere.

Substitute Water for Other Drinks

Instead of drinking a soft drink or other drink with little nutritional value, substitute water instead. The bonus? The calorie savings can be significant. Studies show that Americans consume too many beverage calories overall which can lead to weight gain.

To drink more water everyday, give these strategies a try. Pretty soon, drinking more water will become second nature.
