How to Find Recipes for Kids

Have Some Fun in the Kitchen With Healthy Recipes for Children

Sep 4, 2009 Carol Finch

Getting kids involved in cooking can be a great way of teaching them about healthy eating. They'll also pick up some useful skills for when they leave home later in life!

It can be hard to get a lot of kids to eat right. Some may get faddy about what they eat, some will only happily eat food that isn't good for them and some will only eat the same old stuff and hate to try anything new. Parents do need to take responsibility for monitoring what their children eat, however, and they need to make sure that they eat a balanced diet. This can be a battle. But, it's a battle that can be won by finding recipes for kids and letting them help cook them.

Kids Love Cooking

Most kids love to cook with adults. This can be a very special time for them. They will feel like they are getting special attention, they'll have fun and they can even learn about healthy foods without knowing it! The big plus point here, however, is that it might just be a little easier to get a child to eat what they've helped cook.

A child who worries about trying new foods, for example, may lose some of her fear as she bakes or cooks something. The children may be so proud of their achievement that their desire to try what they made will override their fear of the unknown.

Choosing Recipes for Kids

There are all kinds of recipes for kids that a family could make. Popular options include:

  • Healthy snacks
  • Homemade bread, cookies and muffins
  • Lunches and dinners
  • Puddings and desserts
  • Smoothies and drinks

When it comes to choosing recipes for kids parents may want to take things slowly. Letting the child pick what he will make is a great way to start. They may gravitate towards making cookies and sweet things to start with but can be moved on to other stuff later once they realise how much they enjoy cooking.

Parents may also want to choose the foods that they cook carefully. If their child is suspicious about certain foods or new foods then it might work best to start off with the familiar ones that he will eat. New foods and foods that he says he doesn't like can be introduced gradually over time.

Finding Fun and Easy Recipes for Kids

Many parents will invest in some kids cookbooks to get some ideas to start with. This can be a good way of getting their kids involved but they may soon get bored with the recipes on offer. There are, however, plenty of Internet sites that offer free recipes for kids. Choosing an online recipe and printing it out may just add to the fun they have and, with so many recipes to choose from, this could turn into a regular and long-term activity.

Helping kids to learn to cook can have a lot of benefits. The fun they have here will turn into valuable life skills that they can use as they grow up. Taking them shopping with a list they have written can also be fun and useful. Finally, making sure that they cook healthy recipes for kids from the start can also educate them about eating a healthy diet into the bargain.
