This essential fatty acid plays a critical role in achieving and maintaining optimal health. The list of health benefits is nothing short of amazing.

Omega 3 fatty acids are one of the most studied nutrients because of their extraordinary properties. As researchers learn more about the seemingly endless health benefits associated with Omega 3 fatty acids, the traditional "low fat" view of a healthy diet is becoming outdated. New information suggests that a diet with a healthy ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids (about 4:1) will provide the optimal level of health (according to Michael Murray, N.D.)

Currently, the standard American diet (often abbreviated as "SAD") has a ratio of 20:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3 (also, according to Murray). Most of us are so severely deficient in Omega 3's, many nutrition experts recommend an increase in them for every client regardless of condition. This ratio has an enormous impact on conditions of inflammation, pain and swelling. Inflammation itself is the root cause of many very serious conditions including those which affect the heart, blood pressure and gastrointestinal function.

The health benefits associated with Omega 3 fatty acids are nothing short of amazing. They have been found to significantly lower the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation and improve diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, improve insulin action (especially important for diabetics and pre-diabetics), improve skin conditions such as psoriasis, lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and prevent cancer. And research indicated this is only beginning!

You can increase your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by consuming foods such as flax seeds and flax seed oil, walnuts, and salmon. Remember also to avoid hydrogenated (trans) fats, such as margarine and shortening, which have been linked to heart disease and certain cancers. Typically, high quality fats should make up about 30% of your daily caloric intake. Don't be fooled into thinking those low-fat or no-fat chips are the perfect treat! Grab a bag of walnuts instead.
