It's easy to be tempted by the bite-sized Halloween candy that seems to turn up everywhere (or that we buy for ourselves!) Read these tricks for dealing with treats.
What to do with all that leftover Halloween candy? It's easy to be tempted by Halloween treats, which seem to turn up everywhere at this time of the year. Short of eating it all in a few sittings, why not try some of these tricks to stop eating treats? Learn to indulge mindfully without being bothered by holiday weight gain and becoming frightfully fat! Freeze leftover Halloween candyIt takes longer to eat that way (and some would say that it tastes better, too!) Candy will last several months in the freezer, so for those with strong willpower, this is a great solution. Frozen candy can be chopped up and added to cookie or dessert recipes throughout the holiday season. Hide holiday sweets And that doesn't mean under the bed! Have your spouse hide the goodies and then dole them out a piece or two(or three!) at a time. Savor your favoritesOnly eat the treats you truly love. Why nibble on stale candy corn just because it's Halloween? Instead, take a piece or two of your very favorite candy and take the time to truly enjoy it. Chances are you'll need less in order to feel satisfied. Alternate eating candy with eating something healthy For every piece of candy, eat something nourishing, like an apple, a hard-boiled egg or some baby carrots. The idea is to snap out of the eating trance and consume some real nutrients. You'll get fuller faster without going on a full-blown binge. Donate leftover candyTake your surplus treats to a food bank or local fire station. Sure, it's not the most nutritious offering, but the gesture will be greatly appreciated. Consider giving non-candy treats Concerned about adding to the glut of Halloween candy? Why not pass out non-food items to trick-or-treaters instead .Good ideas for Halloween treats include stickers, Play-doh, pencil erasers and small toys. Remember that candy is available any time of the year Just because the candy is packaged in an orange and black wrapper doesn't make it special! Plan for next yearOnly buy half the usual amount of Halloween candy. Chances are there will still be plenty around to enjoy! The key to enjoying Halloween treats is to select a few pieces that you truly enjoy, take the time to savor them fully (no eating on the run or in the car or in front of the computer), and pass along the extras. Out of sight, out of mind -- and best of all, out of belly!
