Whole foods are an essential part of keeping a healthy diet. Learn what they are and why they are so important.
The concept of "whole foods" is very simple. In fact, it means just that - foods that are in their complete, natural form (or as close to it as possible). Whole foods have not been altered, processed, refined or broken down and put back together again. They do not have anything added or taken away. They are whole, plain and simple. Most nutritionists agree that they are the foundation on which a healthy diet is based.
So why are "whole foods" better? Generally speaking, foods are found in nature with all of the necessary components for proper digestion and assimilation. They have all the various vitamins and minerals that are needed to build and maintain overall health. Our bodies must work to break them down so they take time to fully digest and be absorbed, which makes their impact on blood sugar more regulated. This also has the effect of keeping us satisfied and full for longer periods of time.
Refined and processed foods are essentially broken down and robbed of many of their important healthy components. They are typically absorbed much faster and easier, which upsets blood sugar metabolism and causes a dramatic insulin response. Our bodies are not historically prepared to handle this and, over time, degeneration occurs. The added chemicals (i.e. artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, etc) found in refined and processed foods are another reason whole foods are a better choice. These chemicals can cause digestive upset, allergic reactions, addiction, weight gain, headaches, difficulties concentrating, and a wide array of other serious health consequences.
For optimal nutrition, most nutritionists agree that you should limit your consumption of refined and processed foods. Choose natural, whole foods whenever possible. Focus your diet on fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and oils like flax and olive, lean protein, and whole grains like brown rice and quinoa. As a general rule, avoid foods that are frozen, boxed or canned. Check out our own food and drink section for some great recipes and more info on whole grains and healthy oils.
